Saying Goodbyes to Some Fantastic Teachers

As the end of the year approaches, it is time for us to say some goodbyes to staff that are off on new journeys!  We wish all of these Sailors good luck, happiness, and calm seas.

Jim White, Math Teacher, is retiring after 29 years of teaching.  Jim is a beloved teacher who is fiercely dedicated to students.  We will miss his contagiously happy presence in our hallways.

Stuart Champion, PE Teacher, is off to sandy beaches in San Diego.  Stuart has instilled a passion in our students for fitness and nutrition as well as compelling them to be amazing young adults through his teaching and his example.  Best of luck, Stuart!

Darian Douglas, Orchestra Teacher, leaves us to continue his pursuit of excellence at the University of Oregon in a two year Graduate Music Program.  Darian has grown our student orchestra numbers immensely by providing a safe, kind, inspiring place for students to take risks and explore music.  We will miss him more than we can express.

Jan Michael, Learning Specialist, will be moving to the elementary school level to continue her work in that same role.  Jan brought a passion for equity, a commitment to all students, and a determination to see every kid succeed.  She won’t be far away, but we will be greatly missing her expertise and leadership.  Best of luck to Jan!

Autumn Hawkins, Speech & Language Pathologist, will be moving on to another district next year.  Autumn has provided a nurturing, welcoming room for all of the students in need of her services, and we will miss her dearly.

Sharon Ness, Pathways Teacher, will also be headed to the elementary level to be a Learning Specialist.  Sharon has done amazing things with our Pathways program and has grown our peer mentor program as well as given new opportunities to her students.  Her commitment to inclusion is admirable and so valued.  Best of luck to Sharon!

Finally, Ian Reeves (Profe), Spanish Teacher, will be leaving to teach at Dayton High School to be closer to his home.  We are so thankful that Ian has made that 66 minute commute (one way!) every day and sacrificed time at home to stay with us at LOJ.  He has made a huge impact on his students and fellow educators that will never be forgotten.  We love you, Ian!

Summer Reading!

A message from District Librarian, Miranda Doyle:

Hi all,
The school year is almost over and that means it’s time to think about what to read for pleasure this summer.
Our school libraries may be closed, but our Overdrive digital library is open every day of the year, and is well stocked with ebooks and audio!  Please share the attached Overdrive/LOSD Digital Library flier and bookmarks with students and their families.
You’ll also find hundreds of audiobooks in the school Overdrive account, perfect for that summer road trip. Download using the “new Sora app” for your mobile device.
Of course, summer reading should also include print book from Lake Oswego Public Library. Here’s the video announcement for the Teen Summer Reading Program:
LO Public Library also has a summer reading program for grown ups!
Wishing you a summer full of sunshine, fun, and plenty of books!

Student Support at the Middle Level

We are fortunate to have dynamic and effective staff on our counseling team supporting our students and their families. This year we had the additional benefit of adding support for student success with Response to Intervention (RTI) coordinators at both schools through the use of Measure 98 dollars. We also continued supporting our Talented and Gifted (TAG) students this year through distributed TAG coordinator time at each school. One challenge we have faced this year and for many years is that most of these roles have been structured as less than full time.

We are pleased to share that next year all of these student support roles will increase to full time positions at the middle level. In order to effect this positive change, we will be working more closely together across the two schools and as a student support team. Eight, full-time staff members will now be working to support students where previously we had 7.35 staff members with only five assigned full-time to student support roles.

Using Measure 98 funds, next year each school will have a full-time RTI Coordinator focused on supporting students’ success and ensuring all students have access to timely and appropriate supports. We are so fortunate that Wendy Podpora will continue in that role for LOJ.

Both schools will have a team of full-time counselors organized to support all students in academic planning, college and career planning, and social-emotional development with two counselors assigned to each building and one shared across both buildings. Emily Gillard from Lakeridge Junior High will step into the shared responsibility, taking on 7th graders with last names E-R. Emily is a highly regarded, experience counselor at the middle level that has been doing a fantastic job at LJHS.   Ms Healy will be the primary point of contact for 6th graders and 7th grade last names A-D and Mrs. Trullinger will be the primary point of contact for 8th grade and 7th grade last names S-Z.

The schools will also share a full-time TAG Coordinator focused on continuing and improving our TAG services for talented and gifted students. This role will be filled by Cheri Davidson who has been serving as a TAG Coordinator at LJHS this year.  She has a passion for TAG students and has done some innovative work with the program already.

Our lost & found items will be on display for the final time this year, MondayFriday of next week. Please encourage your students to look through the items or come in and look around, yourself. All unclaimed items will be donated to a charitable organization June 14.

Lake Monsters Robotics FREE Summer and Fall Classes

CAD Boot Camp
Monday, August 13 through Thursday, August 16 at 6-9 pm
Robo Pizza Open House for Lake Oswego Robotics Programs
Wednesday, September 5 at 6:30-8 pm at LHS Room F28
Robotics Fall Training
Mondays and Wednesdays, September 10, 12, 17, 19, 24 and 26 at 6-9 pm
Are you a rising freshman? Are you interested in engineering? Thinking about joining a robotics team? Want to learn CAD?
If you’re a student in grades 9-12 who answered yes to any of these questions, join the Lake Monsters Robotics team for a free 4-day CAD Boot Camp on August 13-16 from 6-9 pm.
LO Robotics and LOSD Community School collaborate to sponsor four high school robotics teams – three FTC teams and one FRC team (Lake Monsters). The teams are open to students from both LHS and LOHS. Each team has different membership requirements and practice schedules, and all four are looking for new members in the fall. CAD is one of the fundamental skills used in robotics, so the boot camp is a great way to learn a new technology, while being introduced to the different teams.
Want to learn how robotics works? Take part in a free Robotics Fall Training with the Lake Monsters Robotics team on Monday and Wednesday nights on September 10, 12, 17, 19, 24 and 26 from 6-9 pm. At this exciting, in-depth training, you’ll learn how to use heavy machinery, software and electrical design for robots, and CAD design basics for building competition-ready robots.
Participation is free, but students must register by July 31 to reserve a spot and receive additional information.
To register for the CAD Boot Camp or the Robotics Fall Training (or to get more information), please send an email to lakemonsters2635@gmail.com. Please include your full name, school, grade, phone number, email and any questions – and we will get back to you with details.
