LOPD, School Zone Enforcement, Thursday, Sept. 1

Know-Your-Rights-Traffic-Stops-1-The-Leaf-Online

The Lake Oswego Police Department will be conducting a traffic safety detail to raise awareness of pedestrian issues in school zones related to speed. The goal is to increase safety in school zones and reduce the number of vehicle versus pedestrian crashes within the City of Lake Oswego.

The grant funded enforcement detail, through Clackamas County Traffic, will occur on Thursday, September 1st, 2016, from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Country Club Rd., adjacent to both the Lake Oswego High School and Lake Oswego Junior High School. The 20 mph school zone in this area is marked with flashing yellow lights and signage indicating that it is an enhanced school zone which means that fines are increased for violations.

Failure to obey the posted school zone limit is a violation of O.R.S. 811.111  (Violating a speed limit) and can result in a citation with an enhanced fine of $320 or more.

For further information regarding this school zone enforcement detail, contact Lieutenant Doug Treat of the Lake Oswego Police Department at (503) 635-0250.

Always in All Ways

I am happy to announce this year’s theme as “Always in All Ways” for the 2016-17 school year!

In my initial conversations with teachers, the thing that stands out for me time and time again is their dedication to students and willingness to do whatever it takes to see them succeed.  In addition to this, there is a belief at LOJ that we are developing young adults that have social and emotional needs as well.  It is our philosophy that school is a place of growth ALWAYS in ALL WAYS.

We want to be here for our students ALWAYS in ALL WAYS.

We want them to know that we believe in them ALWAYS in ALL WAYS.

We recognize their individuality and talent ALWAYS in ALL WAYS.

We believe in making this school a safe and happy place ALWAYS in ALL WAYS.

As your principal, it is my great pleasure to serve the students, staff, and parents of this school (should I say it again? Always in All Ways!).  I am thrilled for our year to begin.  Enjoy your final weekend of summer.

Sign Up for LOJ’s Community Service Day

communityservice

Please consider signing up your student and yourself to volunteer at LOJ’s Community Service Day!  This year’s event will take place on Friday, October 14 (a no school day).  Students can volunteer for one of ten different organizations – from the Caring Closet and the Children’s Book Bank to Oregon Dog Rescue and the Audubon Society.  Please see the blog for the detailed flyer or go to:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f054da4ac2ba46-community1 any time after 7 a.m. on Friday, 8/26 to sign up!  This is a great way for students (and parents) to volunteer with several great community organizations.  If you indicated your interest in helping on the Parent Club registration form this week, please also go to the Sign Up Genius to sign up for a specific organization.  For questions, please contact the coordinators Jennifer Roumell or Tanya Halvorson at LOJCSDay@gmail.com.

Thank you!

Want to use credit/debit to order school pictures? If so, please pre-pay here. We are only able to take cash & checks on location. Thanks!

Fall portraits will be taken soon — and we know it’s only one of the many things you have going on right now — so in an effort to help streamline things for you, this message serves as a gentle reminder of the 5 W’s of Picture Day.

WHO:  LOJ Students

WHAT:  School Picture Day 2016

WHERE:  LOJ Campus

WHEN:  During Each Open House — 8th Grade on 8/23, 7th Grade on 8/24, 6th Grade on 8/25

WHY:  This photo will appear on your student’s ID card, in the yearbook, and can be a lovely keepsake for friends and family.  Fall portraits are also known to be used in The Lake Oswego Review and other publications.  In addition, we have partnered again this year with the LOSD Foundation and are proud to announce our online “Foundation Packages”. For each of these packages purchased online, we will give $5 to the LOSD FoundationSchool pictures that support the district — we thought that might make you smile! 🙂

HOW:  To PREORDER with a credit or debitcard, CLICK HERE, print the receipt, and have your student hand it to the photographer on Picture Day.
For cash or check payments, simply pick up an order form from the school office or on location on Picture Day — and have your student bring it to the photographer. Note that we are unable to make change onsite.

Historically, the building gets very hot & humid on Registration Day, and many students have sports activities that day as well, so please bring a clean, dry shirt to be photographed in. To further enhance the value of your investment, you may wish to consult the “Looking Your Best” section of our order form for tips & tricks (i.e. tank tops, sports shirts, and logos generally do not photograph well; neither do bare arms and underarms). All students will be photographed for ID cards, the yearbook, and school records, so please dress accordingly.

If you have any questions or encounter any difficulty with the online pre-ordering process, contact us at Smile@AisAPhotography.com or 503-636-9650 and we will be happy to help.  Thank you very much.  We love working with the Lake Oswego community — where we have also lived & worked for over 30 years.
Sincerely,

The Barry Family

DETAILED ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS:

2) Select “Order Photos”

3) Enter the login code LOJHS
Enter your student’s information, select packages, update cart, and voila!, we’re ready to take your payment and process your order. We look forward to seeing you on Picture Day!

LOJ Parent Club Welcome & Important Info

back-to-school

The Lake Oswego Junior High School Parent Club would like to take a brief moment and welcome your family to an exciting new year at LOJHS.  While there are many new dates on your calendar, we would like to highlight a few that are coming up at the beginning of the year.

Back to School BBQ Friday, September 2nd, 5-7pm.  This is a great opportunity for you and your family to say hi to old friends and get to know some of the families in a casual setting.  Many families walk across the street to Lake Oswego High School afterward to attend the first Laker home football game.  A huge thank you to Karen Alati and Lisa McAuley for organizing this fun family event!

Our first Parent Club Meeting will be held at the school on Wednesday, September 14th at 1:45pm in the library.  We invite you to come to this meeting to learn more about LOJHS Parent Club and how you can help support your student’s school.

Our Bi-Annual Auction Saturday, November 5th at Oregon Golf Club.  Join us for a fun-filled evening while raising funds for our school.  This year’s theme is “The Roaring Twenties.”  More details to come.  A special thank you to Laurie Daniels and Tricia Saefke for planning this huge event!

The Parent Club enhances and extends the educational experiences of the students and staff of Lake Oswego Junior High School.  We enrich school and educational experiences through: Back to School BBQ, Art Literacy, lunchroom monitor, community service, technology updates, 8th grade celebration, and much more.  The key factor for the success of our Parent Club is the parent volunteers.

Please review the volunteer form in the School Start-up Packet and see if there are any areas in which you would like to help at our school.  You can also learn more at the Parent Club section of the school website.

We are looking forward to a great year,

LOJHS Parent Club Executive Board

Jennifer Zagacki, Co-President
Molly Ducker, Vice President

Next Week – Open House Information

OpenHouse

As noted earlier, we will have open house for all students from 3:30 to 5:00 PM for students to pick up schedules, books, & pay fees next week.  Please note the dates below for grade level specific events.  IN ADDITION TO THIS, please note that this is when students TAKE THEIR SCHOOL PICTURES.  The pictures are then used for their student ID.  There is a picture retake day scheduled in October, but our goal is to have the school pictures completed during open house.  There will also be several tables with information about Parent Club, Food Services, and our Community Service Day.

Please be aware that we cannot start until 3:30 PM.  Please do not arrive earlier in the day and request your student’s schedule.  There is an enormous effort prior to these days to have schedules complete and printed for the dates and times listed.   If you cannot bring your child on the assigned day, you may attend one of the other days, but schedules will not be prepared in advance.

Please also bring all your paperwork and forms with you.  You can find all of these at:

New LOJ Directory ONLINE!

Directory-278x178px

Lake Oswego Junior High School is excited to announce that we are implementing a new FREE app, DirectorySpot, for our school directory.  You will now be able to access the LOJ directory right from your smartphone or computer and it will always be updated with the latest information!  In addition, all North side Lake Oswego schools will now be on one system, so if you have children in different schools you will be able to access all your directory information in one spot.

The app will contain contact names, phone numbers and addresses as well as sort by subgroups within the Junior High such as grades, staff, etc. The app uses iPhone and Android technology, so you can call, text, or email other parents or teachers with one click, right from the app. There is also a calendar tab in the app that has the school calendar right at your finger tips.  The on-line version will allow you to print out a paper directory if that’s what you prefer to you use and also allow the Parent Club to communicate easily to specific grades or the entire school as needed.

The app is very secure and only parents of LOJ students will be granted access.  Each user will logon with their authorized email address and will set their password.  If you would like more information on the security features, please click on this link: http://www.directoryspot.net/security.html

If you would like to “opt out” of the app and NOT have your information included, please just send an email to Kirsten Giacomini at kmg99@mac.com.  The data and users in the app can be updated at anytime throughout the year, so you can always opt out or opt back in later.

Once we have all of the data loaded, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download DirectorySpot and set your password.  DirectorySpot can be downloaded from the app stores for FREE, and it is accessible from an iPhone, Android, or on the Web at https://www.directoryspot.net.

We hope you will love this new Directory “On the Go.”  If you have any questions, please contact Kirsten Giacomini at 503-803-2265.
