STRIPEY SOCK DAY, MAY 11TH!

STRIPEY SOCK DAY TO SUPPORT CRI DU CHAT AWARENESS WEEK FRIDAY, MAY 11TH
May 5, 2018, Cri du Chat Syndrome Awareness Day, kicks off International Cri du Chat Syndrome Week, May 5 -12.  It also marks the 55th year of the discovery of Cri du Chat Syndrome by Dr. Jerome Lejeune.
Max Owens, a seventh grade student at LOJ, has Cri du Chat Syndrome (also known as 5p- Syndrome) – a rare genetic disorder that is caused by the deletion of part of the “p” arm of the 5th chromosome.  He is one of only four people in the state of Oregon with this disorder and the only one within the greater Portland Metro area. Each year the 5p- Society promotes a week of International Awareness of 5p- Syndrome/Cri du Chat. The purpose of this week is to raise awareness and encourage support of those with the syndrome.  We hope you will join us in supporting Max and everyone who has 5p- Syndrome by wearing STRIPED SOCKS to school on Friday, May 11th.  Wear your stripey socks (to represent the bands on chromosomes) with one long and one short to symbolize the deletion of the chromosome in Cri du Chat Syndrome.  Eighth grade science classes will hear a presentation on Cri du Chat on Tuesday, May 8th and each student will receive a pair of stripy socks so they can participate on Friday!
